A group of classes engaged in the same kind of occupational work but representing different levels.
An occupational group is a collection of job series that are alike in the essential character of their job duties and responsibilities, and in the required knowledge and skills that relate to the compensation structure through the assignment of appropriate pay grades, as determined by the State Personnel Director. There are currently seven occupational groups in the State classified system: Administrative Support and Related (G); Enforcement and Protective Services (A); Health Care Services (C); Information Technology Services (T); Labor, Trades, and Crafts (D); Physical Science and Engineering (I); and Professional Services (H). All classified positions fall into one of these seven (7) occupational groups.
The letters in parentheses next to each occupational group indicate the beginning letter of the class code for the classification, which indicates that classification’s occupational group. For example, classifications starting with “C” are in the Health Care Services occupational group (classification: Nurse I, class code: C6S1XX). The class description for each class series includes the number of levels, the occupational group, and a general description of the occupational work of the series.
For example, the Nursing Professional/Health Provider class description states, “This class series uses six levels in the Health Care Services Occupational Group and describes professional work in the field of nursing or medicine.”
