In 2019 the State Office of Risk Management (SORM) hosted its inaugural SafetyCon at Tivoli Turnhalle Theater on the Auraria Campus. The all-day event for Employee Safety Services' 2019 PEAK Safety Campaign was fully booked, with more than 150 state employees in attendance!

SafetyCon 2019 featured remarks by State Personnel Director Kara Veitch and Governor Jared Polis. Six safety champions with expertise in everything from combating the opioid crisis to defending the workplace against active shooters presented throughout the day and spoke to the importance of creating a work environment that engages employees to create change that rewards safe behaviors and continued learning.

Opioid Epidemic

Dr. Rick May shared his views on decreasing the impact of the opioid crisis on individuals, the workplace, and society.

Civility in the Workplace

Charles Passaglia led a discussion on workplace values and professional conduct that supported an inclusive and pleasant work environment.

Active Shooter in Government Buildings

Auraria Campus Chief of Police, Michael Phibbs, discussed active shooters in the workplace and various strategies for dealing with high level security threats.

Safety Culture

Culture Consultant Jere Zimmerman focused her talk on defining, fostering, developing, and maturing management practices that fully support and integrate safety.

Workers Compensation

Assistant Attorneys General Jessica Moran and Cheryl Martin presented on the many ins and outs of the workers compensation system from initial claim to adjudication and settlement.

Available CSEAP Programs

EAP Specialist Jeff Evans dove into the many offerings of the Colorado Employee Assistance Programs and how those services can bolster safe practices in the workplace.

Closing Remarks

Markie Davis, Director of Benefits and Risk Management, offered closing remarks and encouragement for workplace safety advocates.
